looking for mary poppins

i go back to work next month.  if i could have one super power, i always wanted to be able to do what evie did.
and i remember practicing it all the time when i was little, but my fingers never touched exactly at the tips as they should like evie.  not that that's why time didn't freeze for me.  i wish i can stop time, tap owen and ap so they can unfreeze and we can just spend hours and days on end without worrying about me going back to work in 4 weeks!

we were thinking about putting owen in a daycare, but we only need someone to care for him 2~3 hours a day, 3 days a week.  we'd probably spend more time packing his things up, getting him ready, dropping him off at daycare than his actual time spent at daycare.  so our friend told us about hiring a PT nanny instead.  she used one for her first born daughter and loved it.  it was only a few hours a day and not only did her nanny care for S but also cleaned the house, did the laundry, shopped for grocery, and even had dinner ready sometimes.  HELLO!  and that's not all.  she taught S spanish!!  this was a few years ago so we're not sure she still works as a nanny but i asked our friend for her info pronto!  (my BIL speaks spanish so we agreed that he'd speak to Owen exclusively in spanish and throw in some german every now and then too.  we're hoping owen can be quad-lingual.  :)  it's worth an effort right?!)

i wish i was a billionaire so i can have 4 nannies and a house manager like camille grammer.  mind you, she only has 2 kids.  that's 2 nannies per kid.  and she doesn't work!  major envy!!  we're lucky if we can even get 1 good PT nanny for owen.  i liked the idea of taking him to daycare instead so he's not alone with some stranger, but after hearing what our friend had to say, i'm sold on the nanny idea.  owen will enter daycare when he's a little older and needs interaction w/other kids.  until then, i need to find a good (spanish speaking, crossing my fingers) nanny.  she doesn't have to cook, clean, shop.  just love owen like he's her own will do!  mary poppins where are you???

**super excited about tonight's RHBH reunion~!   i'm such a tv junkie it's scary.  i'm just grateful owen now goes to sleep on his own in his own room by 8 so i can watch all of my tv shows and actually pay attention without having to read their lips.

baby steps

we are on day 4 of sleep training.  and i have to say, compared to day 1 - night and day!  ap and i are getting used to owen's cio, but more importantly, owen is getting used to sleeping on his own.  as mentioned before, owen cried for probably around 7 hours the first night, with 3 hours of sleep in between.  that was pure torture.  and sad to say but i actually slept through a couple of those 7 hours.  i know...how cruel am i!!  i felt terrible!  every mom i've talked to and vented to since we started this ST, they all but 1 mom have advised me to stay on course and do not give up/in.  do not go in to pick him up!  (one of our friends said she didn't do any ST w/any of her 3 children because it didn't work.  she held them or drove around at night so her daughter can sleep in the carseat.  gulp!  was my reaction)  my mom's been very supportive, calling a few times a day to check in and encouraging me.  mostly to say that i'm not a bad mom for doing this and all moms go through it.  i just sobbed to her like a baby myself - how could i not?  he cried for 7 hours!

but i'm happy to say (and also scared to jinx myself) the second night, he only cried 45 minutes and last night, didn't even fuss!  we put him down after the usual bath and book & lots of kisses by 8:15.  when he did fuss, he didn't cry like the first night.  it was more of a fuss.  we could see in our monitor that he was just fighting sleep, so i knew it was going to be different from night 1, when he just cried, not fuss.  he woke up at 2:30.  i was tempted to let him cio, but w/the surgery wound and diaper rash we're watching carefully, i got up to change him and feed him.  i was so nervous...what if he cries for 3 hours when i put him back down?!!!  babies are so smart.  i should've given my baby more credit.  owen fussed for 15 minutes this time and off to dreamland he went.  then he was up for the day at 7:30.  i have to say, we're making pretty giant baby steps.

i'm bf'ing and bottle feeding him.  it's working out better than i expected.  i thought he'd reject the bottle as he had done before when i gave it to him, but he's gulping the whole bottle w/out any fuss now.  and lately, he's been eating more than usual.  they measured him yesterday and he is in 50 percentile for weight and 75 percentile for height.  we really don't mind him getting bigger.  and i just love chubby babies!

owen's 100 day celebration is just around the corner.  i cannot wrap my mind around the fact that he's almost 100 days old.  it seems like it was just yesterday dr strachan put him on my chest for the first time and our hearts just melted.  they've continued to melt since...despite all the agony that comes w/this ST ordeal.  a part of me is sad to see him grow so quickly.  i can't wait for all the milestones ahead of us but i'll forever miss him being this tiny and precious...

for crying out loud

do you hear that?  my heart breaking.  everyone and their mamas warned me when i was pregnant about not getting sleep with a newborn.  but no one said a word about crying it out/sleep training.  why did i think babies just fell asleep when they got sleepy? in high school,  i babysat my cousins every single day since they were born but why do i not ever remember putting them down for naps being so difficult and torturous?  needless to say, owen's sleep habit has completely changed since coming home from choc.  he's decided the only way he'll fall asleep is on my breast and wake up at midnight, 3am, 5am.  he wants my breast not when he's hungry but when he's hungry AND tired.  he won't even take a bottle from me.  luckily, he'll take it when ap feeds him.  it's like he knows that i have these milk jugs and makes a bee line for it whenever he wants to eat and sleep.  i know it's a bad habit to fall asleep while nursing.  but lately, it's been my saving grace as he just won't fall asleep otherwise.  he won't have any of the eat-play-sleep pattern.  he will eat-sleep-play.  what this all means is that my breasts are busy twice as they should be.  i am bonded to owen like 18 hours out of 24 hours in a day.  that....is not normal.  and it's driving me up the wall.  i cannot do anything other than bf, wash pumps, grab a quick bite, and play w/owen the short time he is awake.  the worst part of it all is that when he does fall asleep on my breast and i take him to put him down in his bassinet, he wakes up!  then i struggle to hold him back to sleep or back he goes to my breast.  so as you can see, most of my day is spent either fake bf'ing or holding him.  something's gotta give.  and that give is him cio.

we've decided to go cold turkey and let him cry it out.  ha - and we failed the first try yesterday.  ap and i sat in our living room holding each other on the verge of tears (i did cry - ap was literally tearing up).  it didn't help that ap would throw me these puppy faces every 10 minutes.  he's a bigger sucker than i am!  owen cried for over an hour and we had to go pick him up.

right now - owen is on hour 2 of cio as i type this.  i've locked myself in our bedroom, tv volume turned up, going back and forth from laker game and the bachelor, with a cup of yogurt and korean pear to keep me and my mouth occupied.  i called my sister crying about an hour ago.  she said to zone it out and stay strong.

today's ap's friday so he'll be warned when he comes home soon - be prepared for a long 2 days off.  i'm determined to get through this.  i know 2 hours is a long time but i'm praying it gets easier w/ each cio.

i've asked other moms i know how they go through it!! they weren't kidding when they said moms have amnesia because they go on to have more children by choice, forgetting all about these insanely difficult days.  it's honestly the most difficult thing i've ever gone through.  i looked at ap dead in the eyes this morning and said we're done having babies.  it's worse than L&D, worse than breastfeeding, worse than studying for the SAT's.  but you know what, it's really not worse than your precious newborn prepare for surgery, so i keep telling myself that we CAN get through this!

please pray that i don't jump out of our building in these next few days.  if we succeed...this is my reward...

{update: owen failed to fall asleep on his own after 4 hours of cio.  i went to pick him up, change his diaper, nursed him at midnight.  i put him back in his crib awake but ridiculously sleepy.  and whaddayaknow...he fell asleep after 3 minutes of fussing.  he woke up crying at 3:30am.  checked his diaper.  clean.  i didn't pick him up, didn't nurse him.  he cried til 7:30am....all three of have major dark circles and bags under our eyes.  we went for his shots this morning.  the ped recommends we keep at cio.  i asked her wide-eyed "even if he cries over 4 hours??"  yup.  all babies are different.  we got lucky w/a stubborn fighter.  stopping now will only confuse him more.  owen knocked out w/o the usual fuss in his carseat on the way back home.  the kid got 3 hours of sleep last night...i'm surprised he's not ready to kill us.  i put him in his crib when we got home - he started crying.  i bottle fed him (really contemplating bottle feeding him exclusively since i have all that breast milk and he's so breast spoiled), held him, rocked him until he got drowsy.  i put him down in the crib.  i jumped in the shower.  he fell asleep on his own for the first time after cio 45 mins.  it's progress in my book.}

home sweet home

feels so good to be home after a few grueling days at CHOC.  it was uncomfortable and tiring to say the least for ap and i, so i can only imagine how it must've been for owen, all the wires, nurses coming in/out every 1/2 hour, another child crying just a curtain away, machines beeping every other minute, and of course - the surgery wound pain!  his sleep pattern is completely off now.  we definitely need to work on that. but at this point, that is the least of our concerns.  just having owen home after a successful surgery is a huge sigh of relief for us.  now, it's just a matter of how well he recovers and how many kisses and hugs i can squeeze in everyday.
at choc.  he's not so happy.  we love the staff there...but yea, lets not ever go back!
my maternity leave is coming to an end pretty soon.  i still have the 6 weeks of bonding time but i know how fast 6 weeks goes by.  but i am so relieved that owen will be home with either ap or me with only a couple of hours w/pt nanny or daycare.  we haven't decided which route to go.  nanny or daycare.  i don't know how easy it will be to find someone who is willing to come to care for a baby only a couple hours a day, couple days a week.  it's a task i've been procrastinating, more like in denial that i am going back to work soon.  one thing i do oddly appreciate is owen waking up around 5am everyday to nurse.  it's a natural alarm clock that i will need to get used to since that's when i'll need to get up for work. but i'm so gonna miss sleeping in in the mornings after that 5am nursing.  ap's been just amazing, getting up to feed and play with owen allowing me to sleep in, even when i'm sure he's just as tired from working.  it's kind of a routine we naturally just fell into.  they leave to get me some breakfast and spend some daddy&me time together and wake me up around 9 to eat and nurse owen and then off he goes for his morning nap.  i'm worried my body is so used to these morning sleeps that i won't be able to function at work.  and i'm still not drinking caffeinated coffee so ugh~ no bueno!
i know i should be grateful but can i just say how annoying pumping is!!  i wish i can just nurse owen and it ends at that.  i have to pump extra milk out even after nursing, otherwise the OO's get engorged and/or supply dwindles.   this means i don't have the luxury to just fall right back asleep after nursing owen.  i have to go to my pump area, spend another 10~15 mins pumping.  so you can see how feeding/pumping process can take about 45mins~1hour every session!  it's crazy tiring and i hate it.  i feel like a cow.  i love everything about motherhood except these ridiculously large OO's and the over abundance of milk.  i'm tempted to just cut back on the demand so the supply goes down by not pumping but i've gone through the pain of clogged duct (NOT fun!) and scared my supply will vanish completely.  i don't want to deprive owen for my comfort.  at this rate, i can probably wean owen off my breast at 6 months and he'll still have enough frozen breast milk to last him an add'l 6 months....i mean, look at these!
we have absolutely no more room in the freezer.  in fact, he had to throw away the 2 gigantore bags of milk i had pumped while at CHOC.  such a waste!

it's almost time for owen to wake up from his afternoon nap.  it's such a nice day out today - gonna take him out for a walk and stroll on over to barnes & noble!  i need to lose the last 10 lbs!  ugh - why are the last 10 lbs so hard to shed!!!  the first 25 was effortless, literallly.  i didn't move a finger.  the boobs did all the work.  sucks the last 10 requires some actual exercise on my part.
